The Strasberg family is a distinguished and influential dynasty of entertainment. Its patriarch, Lee Strasberg, was born in Budzanov, Austria-Hungary (now Budanov, Ukraine). After immigrating to America as a child, he had a brief acting career, before becoming one of the founders of the Group Theatre in 1931. As director of the Actors Studio from 1950, he was a renowned proponent of ‘method’ acting, influencing several generations of actors, including Marlon Brando's mentor, Stella Adler. His daughter Susan Strasberg, born in New York City in 1938, made her acting debut at just 15 years old and was a successful Broadway and film actress. His other daughter, Anna Strasberg, born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1939, was an actress who appeared in the 1965 film Stay Tuned for Terror. Finally, Lee's son David Lee Strasberg is a producer and director, known for The White Room (2008), Cocaine (2009) and The Tessera Project (2007). The family is also linked to the late '60s counterculture era through cult star Christopher Jones, who was born William Franklin Jones in 1941 and hailed as a would-be rebel successor to James Dean.
