Biography

Royalty is certainly not a better word than to describe the high esteemed Edward Asner, born of Russian Jewish parentage in Kansas City, to Morris David Asner and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Seliger. After attending college, Edward worked various jobs, including a steel mill, door-to-door salesman and on an assembly line for General Motors. He subsequently joined the U.S. Army Signals Corps and posted to France, where he was primarily assigned clerical tasks, followed by his joining of the Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago. In 1955, he made his debut off-Broadway in Brecht's Threepenny Opera and five years later, he made his debut on the Great White Way in the courtroom drama Face of a Hero. An illustrious career was born, and Edward Asner's legacy of excellence lives on.

The Asner dynasty is descended from the esteemed Russian Jewish branch of the family, with patriarch Morris David Asner having founded the successful Kansas City-based Asner Iron & Metal Company. His son, Edward Asner, was a decorated veteran of the Korean War who went on to study at the University of Chicago before embarking on a career of great achievement. His progeny have all followed in his footsteps, with Matthew Asner becoming a well-regarded producer and director, Kate Asner a highly acclaimed actor, Mark Seliger a celebrated photographer, and Liza Asner a successful actress.
