Biography

Fred Gwynne was born into a prestigious lineage of nobility, tracing his ancestry to England and Northern Ireland. His father, Frederick Walker Gwynne, was a wealthy stockbroker and partner in the firm Gwynne Brothers. At 6'5", Gwynne was a towering presence who had a resonant, baritone voice that served him well in Broadway musicals. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Gwynne attended Harvard University where he was a member of the Fly Club, graduating cum laude in 1951 with a degree in English and election to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. His acting career began with the television situation comedies Car 54, Where Are You? (1961) and The Munsters (1964) where he starred as Officer Francis Muldoon and Herman Munster respectively. A true nobleman of the arts, Fred Gwynne was an exceptionally talented actor.
